The starting point

The client launched their eCommerce business at the end of April 2020 and came to me to drive the online strategy from day one — no existing audience, no pixel data, no proven creative.

What I did

  • Worked out who the ideal customer actually was, and concluded Facebook and Instagram were the right channels to reach them.
  • Built campaigns across a selection of products — images, ad copy, tracking setup and targeting.
  • Tested a wide spread of audiences on small budgets first, so the bulk of the money could follow what was working.
  • Segmented the audiences and gave each its own tracking parameters, so behaviour could be read on the destination site as well as in the ad platform. Grouping audiences together saves setup time and costs you the ability to tell them apart.
  • Tested ad formats against each other and waited for results to reach significance before calling a winner.
  • Scaled budgets into the audiences and formats that were returning profitably as the month progressed.

The results

Six campaigns ran across the month. The earliest ones — which had all the target-audience interests bundled together — returned 2.31 and 2.75. The final campaign returned 6.31, and the month averaged 6.08 on £1,799.22 of spend against £10,936.05 of revenue.

The gain came from splitting the audiences apart. Without that, the ones that didn't work would have stayed hidden inside the average, quietly spending money.

“James has really focused on a data led strategy here to maximise our ROAS. From launching a business to generating over £10,000 in revenue in a few short weeks, we have a proven foundation to grow and scale our business. The data doesn't lie and how James has taken the time to build our campaigns properly, has given us great insight into what is really working.”
